Investigative Journalism Safeguard of Democracy and Human Rights

Encouragement of the media and civil society organizations as well as enabling environment for exercising the rights of freedom of expression and media integrity as key elements to further support the country's accession process to the EU.

Main goal:

Objectives: (1) To improve conditions for qualitative and trust worthy investigative journalism available to citizens in the fields of human rights and judiciary (Chapter 23 an 24 of the Acquis) (2) To increase capacities of the CSOs working in the field of freedom of expression and media, enhance their impact on policy making process regarding media freedom, and improve their cooperation through establishment of platform for dialog (3) To contribute towards enabling legal, regulatory and policy environment for the exercising rights of freedom of expression and media and media integrity.

Expected results:

  • Improved conditions for quality investigative journalism through modern/innovative approaches in the areas of human rights and judiciary (Chapter 23 and 24),
  • Increased media integrity and professionalism of the journalists and media associations,
  • Capacities of the CSOs working in the field of freedom of expression and media increased,
  • Enhanced impact on policy making process regarding media freedom, and improvement of their cooperation through established platform for dialog,
  • Public demand of quality journalism stimulated,
  • Media literacy and understanding of role of professional and ethical journalism in off-line and online media increased,
  • Put forward and adopted policy and legislative proposals in line with the EU principles on the quality of law stated in ECtHR case-law and the indicators listed in the Council of Europe resolutions that address the shortcomings.
  • One of the most important results of the project is the establishing of a platform for cooperation of the civil society organizations (through the regranting program) and media, which served as a basis for active promotion of investigative journalism, based upon the highest journalistic standards and ethics. 8 projects were financed through the regranting program. The CSO’s successfully implemented these projects in cooperation with the media. The result of these smaller projects are a number of investigative stories in the form of interviews, articles and video-stories. The platform is supported by the web-portal www.istrazifakti.mk

Training on Investigative Journalism in Stip on Television Star

In addition, on Television Star the training of investigative journalism, which by the organization of Center for Change Management and the Institute for Human Rights on the 19th and 20th of October was held in Stip.

The interactive training of the students of journalism from the universities "Cyril and Methodius" (Skopje) and "Goce Delcev" (Stip) was held by journalists Snezana Lupevska Sozen and Mladen Cadikovski, as well as the lawyer Lazar Sandev.

On Television Iris the platform for cooperation and dialog between the civil society organizations and media (held in Stip) was presented.
