What kind of public sector do we have?

The size and scope of a country's public sector cannot be defined solely by the question "how many people work in the public sector?" Nor is it easy to answer the question of how many people should work or how many employees it is "normal" to have in the public sector. In this analysis we will offer an interpretation of several features of the public sector seen from several aspects, with which we will give answers to exactly those questions: how big should the public sector be, whether it is expensive, whether and how good it is, and whether the public sector in Macedonia makes it a European country or not. In this research, in addition to the total number of employees in the public sector in Macedonia, we use other indicators of the general size of the public sector: general trend of employment in the public sector in a certain period, its structure by activities, gender structure, salaries in the public sector , the share of the public sector in relation to the total population of the country, as well as the share of municipal administrations in relation to the population by planning regions and the share of total government spending in gross domestic product. The parameters used are compared with the countries of the Western Balkans and Europe in order to locate the general trend of Macedonia in relation to other countries.
